NATURAL SCIENCES

BIOLOGY • CHEMISTRY • PHYSICS

Why Study Natural Sciences?

A Degree involving Physics, Chemistry or Biology provides students with flexibility and depth to both explore the sciences independently whilst also discovering the interconnections between the subjects. The course provides a robust baseline across all the science disciplines whilst allowing students to focus on subjects they enjoy the most.

Students studying with us will experience the benefits of the Natural Sciences Tripos but will also get the opportunity to specialise in their preferred subject if they wish. For students considering studying the Sciences at a top UK University, it is important that they explore whether they prefer the Tripos style of learning, as offered at Cambridge, or a single Science course, as offered at Oxford. A Natural Sciences degree is perfect for students who want to learn more about the world around them and apply critical thinking and evidence to in order to problem solve effectively.

Application Guidance

The team at Oxford Tutors have an exceptional track record of supporting Natural Sciences students through their applications. In 2019-20, students who worked with Oxford Tutors to apply to study Natural Sciences were 4.76 times more likely to receive an offer from Oxford and Cambridge.

We are able to explain exactly what an Admissions Tutor is looking for in a candidate and demystify the application process for competitive universities. Our staff have years of experience in helping students access the UK’s top Schools and are all exclusively from the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. As well as our expert Subject Tutors, we also have an ex-Oxford University Admissions Tutor on our team who will run a workshop with students to give insider guidance on how best to approach an application.

We cover all aspects of the application process in detail, through a range of interactive seminars and discussions. We consider the pre-application preparation required, from writing a Personal Statement to making the right choice when it comes to colleges and universities. Students will also spend time learning about the post application process, including the Admissions Test (both the NSAA and the PAT) and the interviews.

Additional Support

Included in our course fees are a range of sessions designed to help students prepare for their application to study Natural Sciences—or an individual Science like Biology, Chemistry or Physics—at a top UK University. The entire admissions process is covered, from writing Personal Statements to strategies for approaching Admissions Tests and preparing for interviews.

Students who are applying this year may opt for additional personalised specialist support. These optional extras would being during the Summer School, and continue afterwards, to help students prepare for their upcoming application.

Personal Statement Consultation

The Personal Statement is a key part of any university application and a student’s opportunity to demonstrate their passion for their subject. We understand a Personal Statement is a long-term project and we have designed a 3-hour package which guides and supports students through the writing process.

During the Summer School, students will have an initial 1-hour consultation with a Subject Specialist to set out a plan on how to develop and strengthen their Personal Statement over the coming months. Students will also receive advice and guidance from an ex-Oxford University Admissions Officer—an expert in competitive university admissions.

Students will meet twice more with both the Subject Specialist and the Personal Statements Expert before the UCAS deadline, once they have had a chance to develop and improve their Personal Statement. This ensures that by the time our students submit their application, they are confident they have presented themselves as strongly as possible.

Admissions Tests

We have designed and produced both an NSAA paper (for Cambridge) and a PAT paper (for Physics at Oxford), and students may purchase a test package alongside the Summer School at a reduced rate. The test paper exactly replicates the style of the original paper, and the package comes complete with a mark scheme, full solutions and a question-by-question video walk-through. These tests cannot be found elsewhere online and are entirely unique, therefore fully replicating the Admissions Test experience for the student.

Mock Interviews

Students can also add a Mock Interview to their Summer School course. Interviews are one of the most important parts of an application and for students making an application in 2021, a baseline interview in the summer is an excellent way to prepare. A baseline interview allows students to work on their development points throughout the autumn and perhaps undertake additional Mock Interviews closer to the time to hone their skills.

Our Mock Interviews are conducted by our specialist tutors with Oxford and Cambridge interview experience. They last 45 minutes: 30 minutes for the interview, followed by 15 minutes of verbal feedback, discussing how the interview went and points for improvement. Students will also receive a detailed written report, which explains the content of the interview, assesses the student’s critical thinking and analytic skills, gives notes on their interview style and explains how they can improve next time.
